Children's Literature is utilized on a daily basis to teach reading and writing. Reading concentrates on pre-reading and emergent reading skills. Writing begins with scribbles then letters and finally letter sounds with a few small words. All subject areas are integrated into themes with a variety of learning activities which reflect the Kindergarten outcomes as outlined by the Department of Education.
Our themes this year have included:
Apples, All About Me, Animals Getting Ready For Winter, Water, Weather, Our Five Senses, Plants and Seeds, Bugs, Author Studies, & Seasonal Celebrations.
Field Trips are also planned to enhance the curriculum. Homework reinforces concepts taught in various subject areas. This includes nightly reading with a response journal, math practice, and other literacy development skills. Assessment includes daily observations of the child's progress, conferences, checklists, and a variety of written work.
